Sola Scriptura: John 12:44-50

'The mouth of the LORD has spoken it' is the criteria for that which is called 'the word of God.' The word of God was first spoken by Himself to His people, such as Adam and Noah and Abraham and Job, and in the New Testament, His Apostles and disciples; then His word was spoken to His prophets (Old Testament) and the Apostles (New Testament) by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, which these men wrote down for the sake of future believers. These men were all eyewitnesses of God and recipients of His inspired word. All other future words are only the words of men and must be measured against God's word, the final rule. There are no more eyewitnesses or inspired men who speak or write infallible words. God's plan has been written down and all that remains is to delve into it with the Spirit's help as we wait for the promised return of Jesus Christ.

John 12:44 Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”

Hey Jennie,

Nice new beautiful background!

Jennie, I am going to disagree with you on this one. I agree that the cannon of scripture is closed, but God does continue to inspire and speak to His people, by giving prophetic words about what already has been revealed, and also continues to reveal Himself on an ongoing basis. This He will continue to do until the end. He said that He will never leave us or forsake us, and thus He brings words of comfort and inspiration to us, which words by the way are infallible truths.

Peace and blessings :-)

I agree that God continues to speak to His people, but He is no longer inspiring men to write scripture. He now teaches us and speaks to us by His already revealed word and according to His already revealed word. It is my understanding that there is no new revelation, except that which reveals more understanding of what has already been written in scripture.

The revelation of understanding is new revelation. We get to understand scripture because of what God reveals to our understanding. This is of itself new revelation, because this knowledge did not exist prior.

All new revelation however will not contradict what already has been revealed in scripture. It will just shed more light.

Another thing. Nothing takes God's people by surprise. The economic collapse which we are experiencing did not take God's people by surprise because we knew about it before it happened, and were able to make the necessary preparations. Christians who were deceived by pop evangelists on TV, however were not. The same is going to happen when persecutions are going to increase even more than now.

Peace and Blessings.
