"Have You No Consideration for My Poor Nerves?!"

I love having 5 daughters. However, there can be quite a bit of drama with so much estrogen in close quarters. Several of my long-time favorite books, by coincidence, have families with 4 or 5 daughters. I can relate to many of the characters in the books, including mothers, sisters, and daughters, since I am all those things. Before becoming a wife and mother, I could relate mainly to the young, single characters. I looked at the moms with amusement or admiration, whichever their character seemed to merit. My practice in reading is always to find something in all characters to relate to and to learn from, whether by negative or positive example: what to do and what to avoid. 
Caroline Ingalls of the 'Little House' books is patient, firm, ladylike, gentle, and industrious. Marmie of 'Little Women' is wise, loving, generous, and kind. Mrs. Bennett, the mother of 5 girls in 'Pride and Prejudice', is a comic-tragic figure, painted to be a negative example and usually a trial and an obstacle rather than a help to her daughters. 
Since becoming a mother myself, to my dismay I have not automatically transformed into Caroline or Marmie, but have struggled daily and often disappointed myself and others. I have quite often been the opposite of amused to see in myself reflections of Mrs. Bennett, or even worse, the wicked stepmother from Cinderella. I have had to realize that in real life, we are all a mixture of admirable, laughable, and just plain awful. I'm also still learning that it is only with God's constant help and grace that I can be and become what I want to be and what I am meant to be. 
So, Mrs. Bennett has now become not only more amusing, but more deeply human to me, and a reminder of my minute-by-minute need for my Father's love and help.

Hallowed Be Thy Name

In thinking about prayer and specifically The Lord's Prayer, the second line of the prayer "Hallowed by Thy Name" reminded me of the different names of God which are so amazing and beautiful. Here is a page that gives many of the scriptural names of God, and following is a portion of that page.

Psalm 2: The Messiah’s Triumph

Apostolic Constitution of Pope Paul VI Indulgentiarum Doctrina: Part Four

"Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those that come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them." (Hebrews 7:25)

Following is an excerpt from 'Indulgentiarum Doctrina' chapter 4:

7. The conviction existing in the Church that the pastors of the flock of the Lord could set the individual free from the vestiges of sins by applying the merits of Christ and of the saints led gradually, in the course of the centuries and under the influence of the Holy Spirit's continuous inspiration of the people of God, to the usage of indulgences which represented a progression in the doctrine and discipline of the Church rather than a change.(33) From the roots of revelation a new advantage grew in benefit to the faithful and the entire Church.

The use of indulgences, which spread gradually, became a very evident fact in the history of the Church when the Roman Pontiffs decreed that certain works useful to the common good of the Church "could replace all penitential practices"(34) and that the faithful who were "truly repentant and had confessed their sins" and performed such works were granted "by the mercy of Almighty God and...trusting in the merits and the authority of his Apostles" and "by virtue of the fullness of the apostolic power," not only full and abundant forgiveness, but the most complete forgiveness for their sins possible."(35)

For "the only-begotten son of God...has won a treasure for the militant Church and has entrusted it to blessed Peter, the keybearer of heaven, and to his successors, Christ's vicars on earth, that they may distribute it to the faithful for their salvation, applying it mercifully for reasonable causes to all who are repentant and have confessed their sins, at times remitting completely and at times partially the temporal punishment due sin in a general as well as in special ways insofar as they judge it to be fitting in the eyes of the Lord. It is known that the merits of the Blessed Mother of God and of all the elect...add further to this treasure.(36)

Scripture says that those who are born again are 'saved to the uttermost' through faith in Christ's finished sacrifice by the work of the Holy Spirit and the Word. There is no mention or hint in scripture of bishops parceling out the 'merits' of Christ (and certainly not of saints and Mary) to believers to save them bit by bit. This is not the gospel of Jesus Christ. See the following passages to hear the true gospel and how it is given.

By taking heed according to Your word.

1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Titus 3:4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The prophecy of Zacharias after the birth of John the Baptist

Isaiah 25: Praise to Our God Who Saves Us From Death

Isaiah 25

Justification and Grace Through Christ Alone

Here are two passages that show first, that justification is a one-time event, and secondly that Jesus is the One who is full of grace and through Whom we receive all grace, and by whom we are reconciled to God.

Romans 5

"If You Ask anything in My Name"

To whom does God's word teach us to look for help? To whom does Jesus Himself teach His disciples to pray? In whose name does Jesus teach us to ask anything of the Father?

The Three Legged Stool Falls Over

The Roman Catholic Church's description of authority, called the 'three legged stool', is an attempt to place man on an equal footing with God: God's word, the magisterium, and tradition are said to be equal.
However, the Bible says Jesus is the cornerstone upon which the church is built, then the apostles and prophets are laid as stones upon Him, then the people that hear the Word from them and are saved come next, and so on.
The Triune God Himself is the 'three legged stool', or else the whole structure is built upon the sand. 1 John 5:7 says there are three that bear witness in heaven; the Father, the Word, and the Spirit and these three are one...There are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and these three agree as one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

In 1 Cor. 3 and 4 Paul talks about the foundation again, which Jesus mentions in Matthew 16:17-19 also, and which has generated so much controversy. Paul says again that Jesus is the foundation and that those who plant and water are nothing, but it is God who gives the increase: God who IS the foundation and God who adds to the building through each worker.
If one is not built on the foundation of Christ, then they are built on sinking sand instead of the Rock. The RCC claims that the three legged stool makes the church strong, yet Paul in 1 Corinthians 4 says: 6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. 7 For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
Paul is saying that the written word is the final authority because it is God who gives it.
Remember back in 1 John 5:9 where it says: 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
This is saying that the witness of God (three in one) is greater than the witness of man, and that he who believes in the Son has the witness in himself; he who does NOT believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that GOD has given of His Son, that God has given us eternal life, and that life is in His Son.
So the witness is by God Himself, and the testimony is given by God Himself and He has shown this in heaven by Himself, and on earth by Himself: the Spirit, the water, and the blood. No three legged stool propped up by a magisterium and man's tradition is needed. We believe in the Word, receive the Spirit, obey the Father: we are washed in the blood, by the Spirit, and receive the living water. We receive this witness of God Himself within ourselves; we don't need the witness of man's authority. We hear His voice by the Word and the Spirit and believe, and we receive the Spirit in ourselves as our witness. We then follow Christ in water baptism because we are covered already in His blood, by His Spirit, who washes us with the water of regeneration.
The 1 John passage also says 'that you may know that you have eternal life'. We don't need a magisterium or oral tradition to help us be saved or know we are saved (the magisterium and tradition tell us we can't know and can't be saved outside of them) but only God, His Spirit, and His Word are needed.

In effect the three legged stool is not three equal legs in practice. Scripture is subordinated to the magisterium and their tradition (interpretations and additions) because they say we can't know anything in scripture or in our lives without their interpretation.

The Word of God is our guide and lamp, and He interprets it for His sheep Himself, by His Spirit.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105)

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night." (Psalm 1:1-2)

Here are some passages that show that God and His word are enough; we should fear Him alone:
Isaiah 8:11 For the LORD spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
12 “ Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
13 The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14 He will be as a sanctuary,
But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and taken.”
16 Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
17 And I will wait on the LORD,
Who hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I will hope in Him.
18 Here am I and the children whom the LORD has given me!
We are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the LORD of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.

19 And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

John 20:30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

Acts 17: 1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.

Sola Scriptura: John 12:44-50

'The mouth of the LORD has spoken it' is the criteria for that which is called 'the word of God.' The word of God was first spoken by Himself to His people, such as Adam and Noah and Abraham and Job, and in the New Testament, His Apostles and disciples; then His word was spoken to His prophets (Old Testament) and the Apostles (New Testament) by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, which these men wrote down for the sake of future believers. These men were all eyewitnesses of God and recipients of His inspired word. All other future words are only the words of men and must be measured against God's word, the final rule. There are no more eyewitnesses or inspired men who speak or write infallible words. God's plan has been written down and all that remains is to delve into it with the Spirit's help as we wait for the promised return of Jesus Christ.
